Email Tips & Tricks: Pre-Header Text
Pre-header text, also called preview text, is the very first text content available in an email creative. Webmail and phone based email clients will show a small preview of the message, after the subject line. Often, the first text is often the "Trouble Viewing" language, which does little to entice the email recipient:
However, it is possible to specify this text. Using an invisible block of pre-header text, this can be done without affecting the visual appearance of the creative, or the position of the trouble viewing text.
Benefits of Using Preheader Text
Using this technique effectively may have the result of improving your open rate, by snagging recipients with the right message or an enticing offer from within the creative. Regardless of whether your subscriber opens, you will have the added opportunity to reach them with a message of your choice.
How To Apply Preheader / Preview Text
To do this, you will need to do a simple html insertion. Place a hidden <div> tag directly underneath the <body> tag, at the top of your creative (before any visible text).
<body style="margin:0px; padding:0px;">
<!-- PRE-HEADER -->
<div style=" display: none; font-size: 0; height: 0; opacity: 0; visibility: hidden; width: 0;">
<font color="#FFFFFF" size="1" style=" color: transparent; font-size: 0;">
Introduce your email with a custom line of text!
</font>
</div>
<!-- END PRE-HEADER -->
